Look — LeetCode wasn't a mistake
For fifteen years it gave engineering candidates a real ladder. You couldn't afford a referral, you didn't go to a target school, you didn't know anyone at Google — fine. Solve 400 problems and you'd interview anywhere. That was a genuinely good thing for the industry. LeetCode flattened access to top-of-funnel in a way nothing else had.
We're not doing the smug thing where we pretend the platform was always pointless. It worked. It was the right tool for the job, for a long time.
But the format it served just died
Here's what LeetCode was optimizing you for: a one-hour slot, a single function, no codebase around it, no collaborators, no tools beyond the IDE you can't actually customize, and a question that's been on the platform for five years. That format was the load-bearing assumption. Every "easy / medium / hard" tag exists relative to it. Every contest, every ranking, every grind streak.
That format is being deliberately retired by the companies you most want to interview at. Not slowly. Not "in principle." With dates:
- October 2025 — Meta. Replaced one of two onsite coding rounds with a 60-minute multi-stage project in CoderPad with an AI assistant. The other coding round still uses no-AI LeetCode. They'll cut that next.
- 2025 — Shopify. Two AI-enabled coding rounds, no sandbox, BYO IDE and AI tool. CEO publicly demanding AI fluency company-wide.
- 2025 — LinkedIn. Read-only AI advisor with production-engineering follow-ups. Concurrency, observability, scale.
- By mid-2025 — algorithm challenges already make up only 30-40% of the interview process across the broader industry, per multiple recruiter surveys. The rest is system design, behavioral, and increasingly, AI-collaborative work.
- OpenAI: has explicitly shifted away from LeetCode-style questions toward production-oriented prompts. Their interviews now center on writing real code, handling edge cases, and building small but meaningful components.
The places that haven't moved yet (some midsize and lower-tier companies, some banks, some defense contractors) are not the places you're targeting. We're guessing. The companies LeetCode was originally built to help you reach are the same companies actively retiring it.
What LeetCode actually taught you
Be honest about what those 300 problems gave you. Three things, mostly:
- Pattern recognition against a fixed library of templates. Two-pointer. Sliding window. DFS over a grid. Dynamic programming with a 1D array. There are maybe 25 of these. Once you've seen each one ten times you're not learning, you're cataloging.
- Speed at writing a clean 30-line solution to somebody else's spec, with the function signature given, the input format known, the edge cases enumerated, and a green checkmark waiting at the end. That's not a fake skill. It's just narrow.
- Whiteboard performance art. Narrating your approach in a way that signals you're thinking — even when what you're really doing is recalling a recipe from the half-dozen identical problems you've already done this week.
Each of these had value when interviews were structured around them. Each of them has dramatically less value the moment the interview structure changes — which it has.
What LeetCode never taught you
The skills the new format actually grades:
- Reading unfamiliar code under time pressure. Meta opens with a bug fix in code you've never seen. LeetCode never asked you to navigate someone else's repo.
- Directing an AI assistant. Knowing what to ask, when to ignore the answer, when to escalate from a small prompt to a large one. The closest LeetCode came was the "discuss" tab.
- Architectural decisions in the first 90 seconds of an empty repo. Shopify drops you into nothing. You pick the directory layout, the test runner, the type config, the format-on-save. None of this is on LeetCode.
- What happens when ten thousand people use what you just built. LinkedIn's follow-up questions land here every time. Locks, retries, observability hooks, what breaks first when memory runs out. LeetCode lives in the fictional world where exactly one user calls your function, exactly once, with exactly the input the problem statement promised.
- Verifying AI output. The single highest-leverage skill for the new format. Reading code skeptically, testing the specific claim a model is making, catching the thing that compiles but doesn't actually do what was asked. LeetCode's whole value proposition rests onwriting, not reading.
Why people keep grinding anyway
Here's the part nobody in interview prep wants to say out loud. The reason candidates pour months into LeetCode in 2026 isn't that they think it's the best use of time. It's that it's the most measurable use of time.
LeetCode has solved counts. Streaks. Difficulty distributions. A fake-game leaderboard. It feels productive because every solve gets a green checkmark. The actual high-leverage skills — reading codebases, directing AI well, judgment under time pressure — don't have leaderboards. You can practice them for an hour and walk away unsure if you got better. The grind is a cope for the discomfort of not knowing whether you're improving.
We get it. We've been there. But you have to break the cycle, because the muscle memory you're building is for an interview that fewer companies are giving each quarter.
The honest comparison
We'll be fair where it earns fairness:
Where LeetCode is still better than us
- The classic no-AI coding round at most companies still maps directly to LeetCode-style. Meta keeps one. LinkedIn keeps one. So do most companies that have added AI rounds. If you have zero LeetCode prep, the no-AI round will eat you.
- The platform's library is enormous. We have ~30 problems right now. They have ~3,000.
- The leaderboard psychology, regrettably, works. If you need external structure to keep practicing, LeetCode provides it. We don't.
Where we are dramatically better than LeetCode
- Every problem is a real multi-stage repository, not a single function. You read code before you write it.
- The AI assistant sits in the editor. You practice directing it the same way you will in a Meta or LinkedIn loop.
- Tests gate progression between stages. The format forces you to handle escalating requirements — the specific shape Meta's three-phase structure tests.
- The agent's posture is execution-only. It will write the code you describe, but it will not propose architecture for you. That maps to how Meta evaluates:"Use AI, but show you understand the code."
- Problems are tagged by company. Filter by Meta, Shopify, or LinkedIn and you see problems specifically structured for each company's variant of the format.
The cope answers we hear
"LeetCode tests fundamentals."
It tests some fundamentals. Hash tables, basic recursion, a handful of graph traversals. The set is small and you'd cover it incidentally while doing literally any project work. The rest of what LeetCode tests — competitive-programming optimizations, niche DP transitions, lookup tables for prime sieves — isn't fundamentals. It's tournament tricks.
"AI will eventually require LeetCode skills."
Maybe. Not the way you're currently learning them. The skill that translates is "I understand graphs deeply enough to know which traversal fits my problem" — and that's a 5-problem skill, not a 500-problem one. If you were going to learn fundamentals from LeetCode, you'd be done by problem 60.
"At least it's structured."
Structure isn't a virtue when it's structured around the wrong thing. A perfectly organized hill of useless facts is still useless.
"It got me my last job."
Confirmed. It was the right tool then. The interview you took is being phased out. Survivorship bias from 2022 is a bad guide for 2026.
What we'd actually tell a friend
Concrete prep advice, no padding:
If you have four weeks before your loop:
- Spend week one on classical LeetCode — but only the 50 canonical patterns. Get them cold. If you've already done this, skip the week.
- Spend weeks two through four on real codebases. Multi-stage problems. Reading code you didn't write. Directing an assistant. Practicing the verification reflex on every line of AI-generated code you accept.
- Mock the workflow. If your loop includes Meta, your mock should be a 60-minute three-phase project in an editor with an AI panel. Not a LeetCode hard.
If you have six months:
- Pick one assistant — Cursor, Claude Code, Codex CLI — and live in it for projects. Build something real. Direct it constantly. Develop opinions about when it helps and when it gets in the way.
- Read open-source codebases of the kind of company you want to work for. Make pull requests. Tiny ones. Get comfortable navigating other people's code.
- Allocate 10% of your prep time to LeetCode for the no-AI round that still exists at most companies. No more. The marginal return on problem 200 is dramatically less than the marginal return on the first thirty real repos you wrestle with.
The bottom line
LeetCode for 2026 is like Toefl prep for a job that stopped requiring English. There's nothing wrong with doing it. There was a period where it was the rational move. That period is ending — at the specific companies you'd take a job at, with specific dates we can point at.
Stop training for the format that's being retired. Start training for the one that's replacing it.
Sources and counterarguments
We are not pretending this view is universally accepted. Here are the better critiques of our position, with our responses where we have them:
- "DSA still matters and is becoming more important." Some FAANG hiring managers still publicly defend algorithm-heavy formats. They're a shrinking minority, but they exist. If your specific target company is one of them, weight your prep accordingly.
- "AI assistants don't change what's a good engineer." Partially right. Good engineering judgment is timeless. The interview format that measures it is not. We're arguing about the test, not the underlying skill.
- "Companies will keep using LeetCode for screening even if not for onsites." Probably true for some companies in some years. Doesn't change our advice. The screen is one round; you have to also clear the loop.
