Stage 1 of 2: Crawl one host
Background. A crawler starts at one page of a website, reads the links on it, follows the ones that stay on the same site, and keeps going until no new page turns up. Here a page is read by calling a function, and site_stub.py holds a small website in memory to try it on.
Implement collect_pages(entry_url, fetch) in site_crawler.py. Return the set of pages found, entry_url included.
fetch(url)returns the links on the page aturlas a list of strings, or raisesFetchError(fromsite_stub.py) when the page cannot be loaded.- Only pages on the host of
entry_urlbelong to the crawl. A URL's host is the text afterhttp://orhttps://up to the next/, or to the end when there is none, and it must equal the entry's host exactly:blog.atlas.testandatlas.testingare notatlas.test. A page on another host is never fetched. - Pages link to each other in cycles, and the same link can appear many times. Each page is fetched at most once.
- First cut every URL,
entry_urland each link, at its first#, and use only what is left:http://atlas.test/maps#topis the pagehttp://atlas.test/maps. Nothing else about a URL changes:http://atlas.testandhttp://atlas.test/are two different pages, and so arehttp://atlas.test/mapsandhttps://atlas.test/maps, both on the hostatlas.test. - A string that does not start with
http://orhttps://is not a link. Skip it; it is not an error. - When
fetchraisesFetchError, the page still counts as found, it has no links to follow, and the crawl goes on. fetchis called exactly once for every page in the result, and never for anything else.
Example
site = StubSite({
"http://atlas.test/": ["http://atlas.test/maps", "http://atlas.test/about#team", "http://shop.test/"],
"http://atlas.test/maps": ["http://atlas.test/", "http://atlas.test/maps/north", "http://atlas.test/maps"],
"http://atlas.test/about": ["http://atlas.test/maps", "mailto:team@atlas.test"],
"http://atlas.test/maps/north": ["http://atlas.test/maps#top", "http://atlas.test/"],
"http://shop.test/": ["http://atlas.test/sale"],
})
collect_pages("http://atlas.test/", site.fetch)
# {"http://atlas.test/", "http://atlas.test/maps", "http://atlas.test/about", "http://atlas.test/maps/north"}
http://shop.test/ is on another host, so it is never fetched, and http://atlas.test/sale, linked only from there, is never found. site.calls lists each of the four pages once.
Notes
- Every URL in the tests is
http://orhttps://, then a lowercase host (letters, digits, dots, hyphens), then optionally a path starting with/, then optionally#and a fragment. No ports, user names or queries. - A site has up to about 2000 pages. Following links from the entry without visiting any page twice never passes through more than 400 pages.
- The result may be any collection without repeats; the tests compare it as a set.
- All ten tests in
tests/test_part1.pyfail on the starter.
Done when Submit goes green.
Constraints
- Python 3.12 standard library only
- Editable:
site_crawler.py - Read-only:
site_stub.pyand alltests/test_*.pyfiles
What comes after stage 1
The next stage opens once the tests for the one before it pass. Each raises the bar, the way an interviewer does in the room.
- Stage 2: Many fetches at once. Every fetch is slow; the crawl has to keep several going at once and still fetch each page once.
The files you get
- Yours to edit: site_crawler.py.
- Read-only: site_stub.py.
- Tests you can read and run: tests/test_part1.py. Hidden tests run on Submit.
The round: no AI, an assistant that only answers
Anthropic runs this round without AI. Here the closest format is answer-only: the assistant answers your questions and reviews your code when you ask, the way an interviewer would, and never writes a line of it. The interviewer asks about your decisions as you go, and the report states the format. You can switch to the agent format when you press Begin.
Frequently asked, briefly answered
Is Web Crawler free?
Stage 1 is free with an account. The last stage needs Nyrion Pro.
Which company asks something like this?
Anthropic. It is modelled on Anthropic's coding round, which runs without AI. Based on candidates' reports of Anthropic interviews. Nyrion wrote this version, so the question you get may differ.
Do I bring my own AI tool?
No. The real round has no AI, so this one opens answer-only: an assistant that answers your questions and can't write code. You can switch to an agent that proposes changes when you press Begin.
What does the interviewer ask?
4 questions along the way about your own code, and one at the end about the whole session. A weak answer gets one follow up. The answers go into the report, which ends with a hire or no hire verdict.
